Upwind, downwind and sprints
Steve, Noah, KC, Pat and I went yesterday afternoon for a blowing 15 knot downwind..only the beaches were black ball so we had to go upwind first. I lasted for about 15 minutes and said no thanks and headed back down for a fast, but short ride. GPS showed 24 km top speed and I wasn't going for the swell, it got me.
This am did sprints with Eva and Pat..10 x 1' on 2' off 100%..Then Pat paddled a 13 km pure downwind from Haydens Junior Lifeguard spot in Huntington Beach to Coast Guard beach...he logged a 7km piece at 25 minutes..thats flyiing...something like 16 km average for the piece.
My turn tomorrow.
Pilaties and paddling
Ok 1 hour of pilates and I still can't move properly. 14 km the next day, today...broke the session up into a 4 km and 4 x 1km and some ocean time..good job Eva and thanks for the pilaties and crippling me for a couple of days.
6 am group
Got up and out of the house before COFFEE and kids! Nice to paddle in a group, very social. 9 km, point to point and 10 x 15 stroke sprints...
Demo Day and classes
Fantastic weekend with demos of 16 skis on Saturday and lots of new faces. Perfect weather for a great morning. Sunday another perfect day for paddling. I gave a clinic on technique and Patrick on rough water....no training but some paddling with smiles.
15 km ocean and bay
D, Pat and Steve Woods..out to the ocean, small surf, small or no wind, back in harbor. 2 x7', 6 x 4', 4 x 40", 3x 2' and 3 x 30"..Steve is way fast, Pat is way slow and I laugh and complain alot....but happy to be out there..with school over in 2 days, who knows what the summer will bring...Junior Lifeguards, sleep overs and camping in the back yard..popsicles and buzz cuts...
Course work
Hard to go alone and in the flats..but managed 2 x 1000m, 2 x 500m and 2 x 250m on our sprint course. All at 90% to Max with rest to recover.
We need to do more of this.
Long Beach Downwind
What a great paddle. 15km downwind straight out on Toms boat. Pat, KC,Tom, Corry and I went 10 miles out the Long Beach harbor. The wind was 20 knots, small easy to ride swell. Best paddle in a long time. Andy Walron, a grip for Hollywood shot some video we hope to show sometime and Eva got some photos which I will upload too. Only bummer is Corry broke his newly purchased CVB Mako 6 in half when he was untieing it from the motor boat...It caught it bow the wrong way the boat was drifting and that was it...thats 2 for him...
Bowen Island race and weekend

Me with the mens winner, Eric Borgness of Wisconsin. He has been a friend of ours for a long time and was the one who talked us into racing in Canada. I'm sure he said its not really that cold there?
First time on his new Mako Elite..way to go! This was a fun weekend away from the kids and absolutely the coldest race I have ever paddled. 31.2 KM with every condition. Some side bump/slop, downwind section, totally flat and big headwind. I was not ready for this, and obviously a good thing I did not go to Molokai either. Died at 15km and managed to battle on in the flat and limped home in the headwind to win, just barely. Heather Nelson, who holds the race course record was a close second..with a 3 month old waiting on shore to great her. Jeez..good job Heather..and I trained for this.
Pat also had his troubles..Lead through the early part of the race(downwind) and then kicked the bucket at 10km in. He managed 6th place. We enjoyed the race atmoshere and thanks to the Bowen Island crowd for a really fun event. Also thanks to Alan Carlson and Mike Fitzmaurice for the use of their Mako 6s and, Jeff Raymond for the transport of the skis. Also a well done to Think Kayaks to have such a presence in the race for such a new company. The Legend and the Evo are hot and people are starting to know it!
easy cruise before Bowen Race
Willie lap (8.5km) cruising speed for loosen up and tune up before we fly to Vancover and freezing temps.
Race is on Sunday. 30km
Tour Guide
Steve Woods from SA via Molokai and myself had a nice 13 km tour out the harbor , up and walk across. A few 1000m pieces along the way. Everyone knows the "Wedge" and wants to see it or surf it..so today, no swell or even a ripple out there....figures.
10 km steady
Nice paced 10 km (ave about 11.5km/hour) every 5' 100% for 15 seconds. Small downwind, side bump ocean.
Texas
Nice workout with Adam from Texas..we went Apex double for a 2 hour lesson and Pat pushed along in a single. Its always a blast to have a mostly lake paddler get in the ocean and have a "swell" time. We hope he can bring back some friends for a surf enty and downwind session. Thanks for coming!
