Pat catching the small waves inside Newport Harbor. He didn't get a fine, and the winds didn't blow 106mph, but yes, a 6 man canoe and an OC-1 did wipe out, desinigrate and sink.
- DeAnne,
According to the OC Register today, the Harbor Patrol sent out two Fire rescue boats to a capsized OC-6 just outside the harbor entrance. They started to pull the boat in, but their tow rope broke, so they had the 6 guys from the boat swim to the rescue boats. They said their motors kept 'flaming out' because there were 14 to 17 foot waves. I didn't realize there is a $1000 fine for surfing inside the Harbor. Does that count when we ride the swells back in from the Harbor entrance?

- Hi Bob:
I don't think you can get a fine on a ski. Its meant for surfers on surfboards, I think.

- The act of surfing is not alowed in the harbor. You can paddle a board around as much as you want, STANDING on it while on a wave is against the law.
For all you nit pickers out there... a surfboard is defined as any floatation device that has any combination of the following: a stringer, longer than 32", made of a hard substance, has fins or a skeg.
Paddeling a surfski into waves is ok because we are not standing (surfing).
That being said PLEASE DON'T be a tool and ruin it for everyone. If paddelers become a problem and constantly have to be rescued, they will change the law.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS!
